THE MELBOURNE CUP. j POITREL 'S GREAT WIN. I j MELBOURNE, Nov. 2. j The weather was bright and fine for j the Victoria Racing Club VTiieeting. The Melbourne Cup race resulted as follows: POITREL, 10.0 1 ERASMUS, 7.0 2 | QUEEN COMEDY, 7.0 3 EURYTHMIG, 9.4 4 There were twenty-three starters.. When the field settled-‘down Salitros was in front, Tangalooma and Malurys being next. Salitros led past the stand [ from Erasmus, Seabound ami Syce Knight, and Eurythmic was running about eighth, and Poitrcl further back. Salitros had two lengths lead of Malurys running down the side, and Salitros still had command to approaching the six furlong post, where Tangalooma went to the front. The order into the straight was Erasmus, Tangalooma, Paratoo, Eurythmic and Poitrel. Erasmus had a lead of a couple of lengths from Eurythmic below the distance, and at the distance Erasmus was in front, Eurythmic being next. Here Poitrel came with a fine run on the outside °”d beat Erasmus by half a length. Queen Comedy was two lengths off third, and Eurythmic fourth two and a-half lengths away. Then came' Kennaquhair, Paratoo, Ecarte, Red' Cardinal, and Tangalooma, with Salitros fourteenth and Malurys last. Time 3.251. ' N.2. CUP SCRATCHING. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 2. HOSPITAL CARNIVAL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of tlie Hospital Carnival Committee was held in .the Town Hall on Monday, November Ist, Mr J. P. Aldridge being in the chair. There were present: Mesdames Oldham, Emerson, Powell, Matthews, Richter and Miss Webb, and Messrs A. J. Joblln, ■T. R: Cunninghame, A. Gifford, Revs. J. C. Loan and W. Lea, Mr E. T. Hill and the secretary (Mr Swindells). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows:

From Misses Batley and Snelling re their probable absence from town dur-' ing Carnival Week.—Received. It was suggested that permission be obtained to have a table in the street, for the purpose of collecting funds, same to be in charge of Mrs Barsby. Progress reports were made by the organisers, Messrs Hill and Cunninghame, which, indicated that matters were progressing favourably. It was reported that the Taihape Band had commenced to practice and had had a good meeting, and that further practices were to be held on Tuesday and Sunday next. Two functions wore to be held at Taoroa-during the present week and the ladies from Taoroa anc Pukeokahu proposed to have the shop in Sherwin’s buildings on Saturday next for the sale of produce. The secretary reported that Mrs Neagle had kindly consented to look after the afternoon tea at the Hospital grounds. Mr Gifford mentioned that the ladles at Messrs Collinson and Gifford’s were furnishing a stall and taking charge of same at the Hospital Grounds, and if required would prepared to furnish a stall on Thursday at the Oval. It was resolved that the offer be accepted wtih thanks. It was resolved that the matter of issuing tickets to patients and staff at the Hospital be left with the secretary.

Resolved that the matter of holidays for the school children be left with the secretary to arrange. It was resolved that His Worship the Mayor be asked to take the chair on the Sunday evening at the Town Hall. With regard# to the Sunday collections it was: decided that the onlyCOllection be at the Town Hall in the evening. It was decided to ask Mr McDonald to be present on Wednesday and Thursday. Resolved . that arrangements be made to entertain the performers from Marion at the Ladies’ Club, and that Cie same be left with Mrs Emerson to arrange. If was resolved that the next meeting be held on Friday next at 'Z p.m. when it ! s hoped there will be a full attendance of the committee. !
