TOTALISATOR FRACTIONS.
SHOULD THEY BE RETAINED.
WELLINGTON, This Day.
Mr. C. P. S kef reft,'' chairman of the Board of Control of the Sports Protection League, has addressed a letter to ■- the Hon. Anderson, stating thal: ‘‘Notwithstanding the convincing reasons al- ! ready given why the present method of handling totalisator fractions should not be disturbed, the Inspector of Totalisators reports that not one sound argument had been adduced as to why jthe, clubs should be allowed to retain these fractions.” Mr. Skerretf objects ;to the publication of such recommendations, and calls on the Minister to stop it. He proceeds to contend- that the fractions, which belong to the people who put their money in the* totalisator, go back to them per mediunr of the clubs, who use them for improvements and for additions to stakes.. He denies that the clubs retain the fractions at all. Already nearly half a million was being drawn by the Government from racing, and it is now proposed to take a further £42,000. He concludes by objecting most strongly to ‘The extraordinary statements of ‘your Totalisator Inspector. * It appears to us that it is no part of Tiis duties to make ' recommendations^ relating to matters of «v policy, of which he can have little ’ knowledge, and with which" he has no concern.” f
