SUPPOSED SUICIDE. &,£ ;& •'•' ; FARMER FOUN£ .SHOT. v ,-jie.' ■ ' Word was received at Whangarel police headquarters late last night that a farmer -name d' Robert Gillespue, aged 33, a single man, had been shot at Taurikura, Whangarei Harbour. Detective de Norville,' Constable Power and Dr Ward were dispatched to the scene. They found the deadbody of Gillespie in bed. He'had been shot through the head, and a heavy l service revolver was alongside th& ; - body. v ,!■■ '■:■■■ ■■!• Indications point to suicide, but there is ho apparent reason or the act. Deceased has relatives at Hamiri, near Auckland. The remains were brought to Wh ngarei for a formal inquest to-day. Deceased was last seen alive on Wednesday.
FLY WHEEL BREAKS. MILL MACHINERY WRECKED, WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. TAUMARUNtn, Oct. 30. An extraordinary accident occurred this morning at Ellis and Burnapd'JM mill, Maunui. Three employees were working, and steam had just been turned on. when the engine started Itself and got beyond control. The fly wheel raced, and flew into dozens of pieces, wrecking one engine alongside, and bending a big connecting rod like putty. One piece' of the fly wheel is now lodged in the chimney stack, which was cut in tw . A heavy section., hurled along, tore a pathway through the roof, and went clean through a timber stack and became embedded in the earth over a hundred yards from the scene of the accident. Other broken pieces flew in all directions, causing widespread damage, smashing all the machinery in trie way. The engine driver (Toe Plimley) stuck to his task, and had a most miraculous escape. The timber mill must, be closed for a period, but the box factory will resume work on Monday. v -r> evlinder of the large engine is unhurt. It is estimated that the damage done will run into thousands OP pounds.
