A MAGNIFICENT RACE!

close in again. A little further osi they spread again, and then Vender ra gets away, closely followed by Rainstorm. A few moments later the lior,ses get bunched again, and two fall. Then Rainstorm swerves towards the palings just as the others catch up Still Vendetta leads, and the excitement is intense.
On! On! Faster and faster. Now closing, now spreading; Vendetta or Rainstorm always leading. On- On! Till at the “corner” something happens, nobody knows what, but Rainstorm suddenly plunges and throws bis. rider over his head. Hie is out of it — stil Vendetta has not yet won. Martindale rides superbly; never has he [ridden so we!l_ The crowds shout, themselves hoarse with .excitement, it looks as though their favourite is going to win. But Vendetta is not much ! ahead, and is very hard pressed. j On they go! Can they go faster? ■' Vendetta is right ahead —only a few yards to j the winning post—yet it seems miles, both to the rider and the spectators. On! On! Two of the others nearly catch her up. Will he be overtaken? On? On? Now it’s neck to neck. . .
A sudden 4 hush seems to overtake the course, «Tid then goes up a tremendous cheer, Vendetta HAS WON'!— In “A Fortune at Sake,” which wib he presented at the Town Hal] on nr day night.
