At the Police Court, George Birch, driver of a baker’s motor van, was fined £5 each on two charges of the theft of benzine. Accused had stored his van and motor car in a *fbcal garage for the last six months. Quantities of benzine were missed, > and yesterday accused was seen taking benzine from the tanks of' Cars in the garage. The police laid a trap, and early this momfng~accused was caught in the act of pumping benzine from two cars,
GOVERNMENT HOUSING. BUILDERS’ SCHEME REJECTED. WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. OVERDUE SCHOONER,
FEARS FOR THE JUBILEE. WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. Conseru is felt for the safety of the auxiliary schooner Jubilee, which was scheduled to leave Niue 63 days ago for Auckland. Owing to lack of telegraphic communication with Niue* the actual movements of the schooner are‘ not’ certain, but it is 'feared, owing to the great delay, that disaster has occurred. Wireless -warnings to shipping to keep a look out for the Jubilee have been issued the Awanui, Suva, and Apia, stations/ and' the Governor-General, has communicated a request to-the commander of the sloop Veronica, en route to Apia, to visit Niue at the earliest moment consonant with Admiralty instructions.

NEW CARGO STEAMERS, DUNEDIN, Oct. 20. The Union Company have purchased a number of cargo steamers as part of their extensive programme of afterwar construction. The steamers are the Cape Colony (formerly the War Palace), 3112 tons; Cape Natal (formerly War Foam), 3096 tons, ..Stolberg, ;5886 tons; Cleopatra, 2200 tons; Irmjgard, 5900 tons; and John Heidmann, |34so'tons. These boats will be renamed the Kaitokl, Kaikorai, Waiotapu, Koraimi, Waikouaiti and Kaimanawa. PROPOSED NEW DIOCESE. AUCKLAND, This day. The Synod unanimously passed a resolution: “That this Synod considers that for the welfare and progress oi the Church, it is essential that the formation bf*a diocese in'Taranaki should be undertaken, without further delay.” It was further resolved: “That the Auckland Diocesan Committee be appointed to raise funds for this ot) ject from the people of Auckland Diocese, with power to appoint an organiser, whose salary and other inctdential expenses shall be paid out or the money raised; and that the money so raises he paid over by the- Committee to the trustees of the r Bishopric fund.
