A prisoner named John Levi aged 24, a Maori belonging to Bapaki Pah, who appeared at the Lyttelton MagCourt on a charge of unlawful interference with a Maori girl under the age of- sixteen years, ws.s found dead in his cell in . Lyttelton gaol on Saturday, his throat being cut. At the inquest, the gaoler said Levi was issued with, among other things, the regulation bread knife. When witness visited' the cell at 6.10 p.m. he found -Levi lying face downwards, dead on the mattress, with his throat cut, and the - knife underneath him. The coroner recorded a verdict Of suicide, adding that the gaol authorities had no knowledge of any suicidal tendencies on the part of the deceased.
