TAIHAPE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Council met on Friday at 7.30 p.m. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Joblin), and Crs. Reid, Cunninghamme, Davies, Eteveneaux, Turnbull and Fookes.

The minutes of the last ordinary meeting and special meeting Avere read and confirmed. CONDOLENCE.

Before commencing the business of the Council, His Worship expressed regret at the loss sustained by the Borough by the deaf IT'of Mr. P. Coleman. It was resolved that the Council place on record its appreciation of the services of the late Mr. Coleman, who was a faithful servant and worthy citizen; and that a copy of the resolution and* letter of condolence be forwarded by the Council to Mrs. Coleman and family. - CORRESPONDENCE.

Outward correspondence as read was approved, and inward correspondence dealt with as follows: —

Re transfer of lease from D. Neagle to G. E. Little —Transfer approved.

From the Minister of Lands re Bray lease —Received.

From Minister of Lands re vesting control of Taihape Domain in Council —Received.

From Chief Inspector of Explosives re storage magazine—Resolved that estimates of the cost of a magazine be procured locally.

From Health Department re drainage at estate of Mr. Higgins —Resolved that Health Inspector's suggestion be adopted. From Defence Office, Palmerston IST. re war trophies—Received. From Town Clerk, Waihi, conveying resolution re cost of living —Received. From Town Clerk, Auckland, re Land and Income Tax Act Amendment, 1920—Referred to Finance Committee. MITTEE'S REPORT. 1. With reference to the application of Rev. J. C. Loan and Mr. C. Lovell for a Street Light on Birch Road, it was recommended this be done, provided the residents pay the sum of £9 1/2. 2. That quotations be obtained for a 48 B.H.P. motor for use at the High Lift Pump.

3. Thar they have no recommendation to make in reply to the letter from the Chamber of Commerce, re light on footbridge at Railway Sta'tiOn, and thatTa letter be sent to the Chamber, pointing out that this matter is out of our jurisdiction.

4. That Niven & Co's account lie held over until further details are received.

5. That a letter be forwarded to the Spiral Pipe Co. asking should an order be placed with them for the pipes required, how long would it be before the necessary pipes etc. would be landed in Taihape. 6. That the letter from Boorh Maeff)onald & Co. re pump be received. 7\That it be a recommendation of this committee for the Borough Council to appoint two delegates to be present at the Hydro Electric Power meeting.

8. That the Dominion Analysist re-, port be received... Resolved: That the Council write to the Minister of Railways, advocating extension of the railway overhead footbridge to Eagle Street. The report was adopted.

FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT

Your committe'c""iieeomends: — 1. That accounts and vouchers amountinf to £1923 0/8 be passed for payment. 2. Treasurer's report be presented herewith.

3. That the vacant section between Library and Mr. Swedlund's shop, 22 x CO feet be leased by auction'for a term of 21 years at an upset price to be fixed, plans and specifications of building to be opproved of by the Council.

4. That a draft clause be prepared for insertion in the Washing-up Bill empowering the -Council 4o borrow £3500 supplementary plant loan. Electric Light Department at 5| per cent. 5. That the £IOOO loan be referred to the Borough solicitor. (5. That the Public Trustee be asked to hold £2OOO being last payment of £I7OOO Loan, and falling due on Ist October 1920, until the Ist April 1921 at a premium interest of 1 per cent. 7. That the Lessees of Section 2, Block IV be informed that their request of 6th September 1920 cannot be granted. 8. That this Committee authorises the expenditure of approximately £4O, being the estimated cost of widening the road at Cemetery as recommended by the Works Committee. 10. That a rebate of £2 10/- be granted to the Taihape Volunteer Fire Brigade on rent of Town Hall for 2nd September. Resolved: That Clause 10 be amended ~0. read: That the Taihape Volunteer Fire Brigade be granted a rebate of £6 2/- rent of 'Hall, and that no charge be made for 24-coloured lights, to be taken back into the Council's •itock.

The report, as amended, was adopted. -.-.,- WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. Your Committee recommends :-t----1. That the road be widened in front of cemetary providing the Finance Committee is agreeable to the expenditure of £4O (estimated cost.) 2. That the foreman's report dated 6th September be adopted.

3. That the tenders of Mrs. M. B. Giles for £25 be accepted for the lease of section S 4 for one year from Ist October 1920. 4. That the Town Clerk be authorised to interview the Minister of Lands for Workers Homes.

J 5. Report that the Board of Trade has granted permission to construct kerbs and channels in Main and Tui •Streets. - -

6. That Mr. P. Kearin's offer of £45 for Section 55 be accepted provided he pays all costs of transfer etc.

7. That Mr. J. Prouse be informed that this Council has received intimation from the Rangitikei County Council that no arrangement has been made in respect of the adjustment of heavy traffic licenses and that the balance due for heavy traffic licenses must be paid forwith. 8. That the Town Clerk be instructed to arrange for a conference with the Rangitikei County Council re allocation of heavy traffic licenses. GENERAL. The Mayor drew attention to the frequency of requests for permission to conduct Street Stalls, and it was resolved that the matter of granting such permission be left in the hands of the Inspector of Bye-Laws, and that the only site to be used be that between the Triangle and Messrs. Dwan Bros.' property.

Resolved: That the Works Committee be asked to report on the drain in Kaka Road and make some recommendation to abate the nuisance now

existing. The Council then adjourned till 22nd October, at 8 p.m.
