FIRE AT MATAROA.

A SAWMILL DESTROYED

At about. 6.30 on Sunday morning a fire broke out at Leur’s mill, about two miles from Mataroa. The fire started near the engine, and on account of a breeze which was blowing’ at the time, it spread rapidly to the breaking-down saws. The wind then dropped, and an energetic bucket brigade managed to get the fire under control. The engine was badly damaged, the belting and rollers were de. stroyed, and a quantity of wire rope was rendered useless. The twin saws wore saved. The mill would have ceased operations To about a fortnight on account of the bush cutting out, and the loss is therefore a most unfortunate one, as the planf fs not worth renewing on account of the depletion of the bush area.
