o MESOPOTAMIA CAMPAIGN. TROUBLE NQKTH OF BAGDAD. SAMARA UNDER SIEGE. LONDON, Aug. 31. A Mesopotamia communique reports: “In the Hillah area, 60 miles south of the Thirty-fourth Brigade column conducted" punitive measures. In several localities north of Bagdad the country is becoming more disturbed. Samara, 80 miles north of Bagdad, is reported to be invested. North-east ef Bagdad, the garrison of Tffz Khermutli has been relieved. A small column drove off the enemy, killing thirty. Bakubah station and town, which were sacked by the insurgents, were retaken on Saturday. In North-west Persia the Persian Cossacks are refitting at Monjil. The “Reds” did not pursue them. Owing to the danger of disaffection, many of the emigrants were sent by the Amir to a remote district beyond Hindukush. Only a few Bolshevik agenTs now remain in Kabul, and their movements are being restricted by the Afghan Government. The British Government is feeding and clothing the emigrants who straggled back througn the Khyber Pass, FIGHTING IN PERSIA. BOLSHEVIKS STILL ACTIVE. DELHI, Sept. I. Persian Cossacks, under Starosselsks, who recently defeated the Bolsheviks at Resht, were obliged by •superior forces to fall back on Menjil, where a force supported by Britishtroops is now resting. The Bolsheviks have not made any advance beyond the immediate neighbourhood of Resht. MUSTAPHA KEMAL. ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION. . I PARIS, Aug. 31. The report of tlie attempted ®assassination of the Nationalist leader Mustapha Kemal received, iq Constantnople, states that it occurred during a trip to outside Tokat. A man on the roadside fired three shots, killing Kemal’s companion. Kemal was hit in a leg. The assassin was captured ana executed.
