A STOP-WORK MEETING. DECISION TO RESUME WORK. WELLINGTON, This day. The Watersiders held a meeting this morning to consider whether they would accept an engagement to work the superphosphate cargo in a Japanese steamer. After a lengthy meeting it was decided to take a ballot, which resulted in a vote for return to work. The men will start on the wharves at one o'clock to-day. FATAL SCALDING ACCIDENT. ROTORUA. This day. W. P. Doherty, a returned soldier, died at the hospital last night, from the effect of scalds following on falling into a hot stream seven weeks ago at Ohinemutu. He appeared to be recovering, but his heart became affected. He leaves a widow.
ALLEGED MURDER. SETTLER SHOT DEAD. AUCKLAND, This Day. Sidney Olaymore Eyre, a. settler of . Pukckawn, about seven miles from Tuakau, was murdered in his bed last night, evidently by a shot fired through the open window. Eyre, who was a married man with five children, retired with his wife to the bedroom at 9 p.m. They occupied separate beds in the same room. Eyre slept alongside or near the open window. About midnight his wife was awakened by an explosion, and found her husband dead with the top of his head blown off. She sent the eldest boy to the Post vOffice, whence word reached the Poke%ohe pdliee, who left" for the scene of the tragedy ait 4 a.iEr. Eyre was for two years on active service in the late war. He was a sheepfarmer by occupation, and a man of kindly disposition.
