INCREASE IN CRIME. —, Received 11.10 a.m. f SYDNEY, This day. The Inspector-General of Police, in presenting its annual report, states that there has been a phenomenal increase in serious crime since the termination of the war. .The increase was accentuated by the shortage of police. There is a marked tendency among all. classs to carry firearms, and it is apparent that legislation to restrict such is urgently required. HONOURS CONFERRED BY PRINCE. Received 11.10 a.m. SYDNEY. It is unofficially slated that the Prince of Wales bestowed the following honours* at Wednesday's luncheon on the Renown: — Knight Commander of the Victorian Order: Dieut.General Sir Brudnell White, and Rear-Admiral Grant. Members of the Victorian Order: Mr Clifford Hay, secretary of the Premier's department, and Lieut.-" Colonel Heritage, Chief Instructor of the School of Musketry.

When he became acquainted with the Federal tax on the visiting pressmen with the Prince's, party, Mr Hughes stated that he had written to the pressmen expressing regref, and adding that the payment would be refunded. i THE COAL CONFERENCE. Received 11.35 a.m. SYDNEY, This day. , The Chief Inspector of Stock estimates that as the result of the recent drought, the lambings this year will be two millions, or only 27 per cent, of the ewes mated in the autumn and winter. A BASIC WAGE, Received 11,45 a.m. MELBOURNE, This day. Justice Starkey, deputy president of the Federal Arbitration Court, refused £2OO per annum as the basic wage for Government servants, saying that £l9O per annum was enough for a single man to live comfortably on. He would, however, add £3O or £35 as a, married allowance. THE DEFEATED GOVERNMENT. Received 11.45 a.m. MELBOURNE, This day. The Victorian Government intends to again submit the Public Service clause in the defeated Bill to Parliament on Tuesday. It is stated that fourteen Ministerialists were absent on Wednesday.
THE FALLENI CASE. . SYDNEY, Aug. 19. The Falleni .case is proceeding. Medical evidence was given to the effect that before Birkett's body was placed in the fire, according to indications, the head had been smashed. Birkett's son gave evidence that Falleni took him to South Head shortly after his mother's death, twice took him to the bush at night, and dug deep holes, the implication being that in the first Instance she intended to throw her victim over the rocks and at other times meant to kill, and bury him in a grave he, himself helped to dig. SYDNEY, Aug. 19. Falleni, the man-woman, charged with the murder of one of her "wives," was committed for trial on a charge of murder.
