Word was received by the Collector of Customs shortly after noon to-day that tlie Northern Cc/smpany’s auxiliary schooner Te Teko is a complete wreck on the reef at the so-uth-east end of Slipper Island, near Mercury Bay. The inessage gave eigh_t o’clock on ls‘:-iday night as the time of the wreck, and adds that the crew have all arrived safe at Tairua with “the exception of one, Joseph Gobie, who was drowned. Nofhing whatever hue been saved.
VVOMAN PURNED TO DEATH‘
THAMES, Aug. 9. A fire occurred at 4.35 this morning
in a four-roamed house in Hape Road, occupied by I\‘l‘l-g Francis Varney. a widow, aged 80, °li.ving alone. The residence was beyond the water supply area, blll‘ when the brigade urrived it formed a bucket brigade. carrying the water from the town supply race. The fire had a good hold, and it was impossible to enter the building. Vvhen ‘the flames had been masteredsthe charred remains of Mrs Varney were found, and fhese were rem-’o.ved to the morgue by the police. Varney was a highly re-‘ spected resident of Thames, where she had lived over 40 years. She was a maternity nurse for many years. She leaves a married daughter, resident down the coast, find a son at Hamilfon in the drapery‘ business. There were no insurances on ‘the property. '
