FOOTBALL.

POWNALL TROPHY. RANGITIKEI V. TAIHAPE. The Rugby rep_ match between the Taihape and Rangitikei Sub-Union teams for the Pcwnall Trophy was held here on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Rangitikei by eight points to six. Owing to pressure of cable news and other matter, a full report has been held over till to-morrow.

VISITORS ENTERTAINED

In the evening, the members of the visiting team were entertained by the local sports at a smoke concert until their departure by the south express for Maxton.

AGENTS VERSUS PETROL. The Agents are not satisfied that their defeat by Petrol is any indication that the Agents ’ team is an inferior one, and a challenge has therefore been issued by them ,to the Petrol reps. The game will be played on Thursday next, 29th July, and should attract a large crowd, as the proceeds will be~ devoted to the .soldiers’ memorial fund.

Some of the representatives of each team have been indulging in a little surreptitious training, and one portly agent was only prevented from indulging in a cold shower on Saturday morning by the fact of the water pipes being frozen. He does not, however, consider the chances of his team are prejudiced ,to any great extent by the incident.

Permission to make a charge of .1/ for admission to the ground has been obtained.

RUGBY REP. MATCHES

At Carterton on Saturday, \Vaira-, rapa defeated Hawke’s Bay by 12 points to 5. The Thames Rugby rep. team beat the Auckland reps, on Saturday by 20 points to 6. THE LEAGUE GAME. At Auckland on Saturday, the visiting English team was defeated by Auckland by 24 points to 16.
