UTIKU NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Despite the fact that It was a wretched wet day last Thursday, a fair number of interested spectators turned out to witness the hockey match between Rangataua Ladies’ Hockey Club and “The Kiwis”--that is the name of the Utiku Lad! .•/ Hockey Club. The visitors won by. 4 goals to 1. the goal‘for Utiku being secured by Miss Elsie Gallagher. When it is remembered that the Rangataua team has only sustained one defeat in three years, it is creditable of the “Kiwis” with only a few weeks’ playing, to keep the visitors scores so low. The local club entertained the visitors at lunch at Mrs Phillips, and after the match they were the guests of Mesdames Gallagher, Phillips and Hebberd and Mr P. Nicholls, at afternoon tea. which was partaken of at Mrs Phillips. A word Of praise Is due to Mrs Phillips for the way in which she catered for the visitors, for she went to a great deal of trouble to make things pleasant for the guests. The Rangataua' ladies went, home by the five o’clock train, expressing themselves as- pleased with the day’s outing.

The second of the quehre parties, organised by the school committee took place on Friday night, and was as successful as ’its predecessors. Mrs A Matthews and Mr “Mick” Jackson were the prize-winners, with Mrs Maugham and Mr W. D. Davis as winners at the wrong end. Supper was the finale of a pleasant evening. During the week-end a railway football team came to down form Taihape to try conclusions with the Utiku Juniors. The local boys won by 6 to nil. Mr D. Jackson was referee c

A public farewell and presentation is to be tendered Mr and Mrs A. F. Gibbs in the Hall on Friday night, and if the man in charge of the weather is only considerate and gives us a fine night there wilTbe a large attendance to pay a well-deserved tribute to two worthy residents whose removal from Utiku is a distinct loss.
