CLABBY MEETS HOLLAND. WANG AN UI, July 19. Owing to Uren suffering from mumps, the Wanganui Amateur "Boxing Association has secured Clabby to fight Holland on July 23. BURNS OUTCLASSED. BECKETT'S EASY WIN. LONDON, July 10. In the boxing match between Joe Beckett and Tommy Burns, fought at the Albert Hall. Beckett won ea'siiy, Burns' seconds throwing in the towel in the seventh round. The Albert Hall was not. as crowded as was expected. The opening round was tame. Beckett had ail his own way, Burns showing poorly. Beckett scored all ways. As the bell rang. Burns appealed for a foul, which the referee ignored. In the second round Beckett landed frequently with both fists on his op* ponent's body. A hard left to Burns* nose brought blood. Burns was only able to hold on while Beckett was adding points. The third round brought a dramatie surprise, Burns winning the round from start to finish. He sent a left hook to Beckett's jaw- early in the' round. This was v the best punch up to then. Burns repeated the bTow. several times and worked his right occasionally. Beckett meanwhile played for his opponent's body. I The fourth round saw heavy fight- ' ing, Burns ducking cleverly and show- ' ing traces of his old footwork. Horepeatedly countered successfully, aad many of Beckett's blows missed their mark.
la the fifth found, Burns, after lively spatfriag, became sligh:t% unsteady after receiving a hard right to the jaw. Beckett missed many opportunities. Bums endeavoured to retaliate with Ms left, but his efforts lacked power. In the sixth round Burns began operations with several inflictive punches to the head. Becektt responded and gave considerable punishment to Burns, who was becoming weaker.
In the seventh round Burns' right eye was almost closed, but. he was still game and crafty. Beckett delivered a nasty blow to the jaw and then an uppereut. This was the decisive blow. Burns hung on, but Beckett sent a right to his jaw, felling him for eight; seconds. Burns on rising received another terrific uppereut, and the towel was thrown in by his seconds as the bell sounded.
The fight was a triumph for youthful strength. Burns was continually holding, and was once cautioned.
