DAMAGE BY FLOODS.

HEAVY COST OF REPAIRS. POSITION IN KING COUNTRY. TE KUITI. July 3. The heavy expenditure caused to local bodies by the floods is becoming very apparent. The Waitomo County Council alone has spent over £7OO in getting horse or vehicle tracks through to back-blocks settlers. At the council meeting yesterday it was reported that the Potata Road had slipped away altogether, and the settlers were anxious to get a pack track through. The road ran along a papa face, and it has disappeared. Meanwhile the settlers have no means of access. Word was also received that a slip on the road from Hangatiki had blocked access to the Waitomo Caves, and steps were taken to re-open it. On the Oamarn Road in from Otorohanga a wash-out has occurred, and dailv news of damage comes to hand. The local bodies are keeping a separate account of the expenditure incurred, and it will run into thousands of pounds, in the hope of obtaining substantial assistance from the Government.
