FOOTBALL.
THE MAIN TRUNK UNION. ; Delegates from the Wanganui Rugby Union. Ruapehu. Taihape, Rangitikei, and King Country Sub-Unions, met Mr Geo. W. Slade. chairman of' the Management Committee of theN.Z. Rugby Union, in Taihape last night. Mr G. H. Pownail, President of the Wanganui Rugby Union, who acted with Mr Frank Hayward (of Wanganui) occupied the'chair # The primary business for discussion yta,s the application of Ruapehu, Tai-. hape, King Country, and Rangitikei Sub-Unions for the recognition and' affiliation of a new Rugby Union embracing the Main Trunk diistrict, t-O' be called the Main Trunk Rugby Union. The N.Z.R.U. had deputed Mr G. W. Slade to meet the Wanganui R.U. and the various sub-unions concerned in conference, and endeavour to come to some satisfactory arrangement.. •*' This matter was discussed at considerable length, and the conclusion arived at was that it was impossibleto form this Union at present. Every consideration would .be given to theformation of the new Union between Ruapehu, Maniapoto and King Country.
The question of location of the Wanganui-South Island match was dealt with, and the decision finally arranged that the game be played at Taihape on August 14th. A handsome challenge trophy was presented by Mr G, H. Pownall (president of the Wanganui R.U. for competition among the four sub-Unions — Rangitikei, Taihape, Ruapehu, and Wairoa. The trophy was a beautiful example of the silversmitb/s craftsmanship, being a full-sized silverplated football on an ebony stand. The preseuTation was niade to Mr G. Wright son, as presiednt of the Taihape Sub-Union. The donation was received-with enthusiasm, and hearty thanks were tendered to the generous flonor. SATURDAYS MATCHES. The following matches will be playi ed on tin"- local Recreation Grounds on Saturday:— Huia Seniors v. Pirate Seniors (fourth round); start at 3 o'clock. Huia Juniors v. MataToa, at 1.30 o'clock. The match between Pirate Juniors and Utiku will be played at Utiku on : Saturday afternoon, Saturday's match between Huia and Pirate Seniors will probably be the last occasion this season in which the public of Taihape will have the opportunity of seeing "Moke" Be'lliss playing on the local grounds, as he will be leaving with the New Zealand rep. team in mid-July for Australia. Mention of this player reminds us that he was the winner r* a r>air of football boots presented for the best forward in the North Island in the malteh played at Wellington Ur' Saturday.
