TAIHAPE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL ME-l3'l‘L\7G.

A,special meeting of the Borough

Council was held on Friday afternoon

to consider the passing of a special resolution, the recéipt of the valuex-’s report on the improvements on section 2, block 4, and the request of the Otaihape Meat and Produce Company‘ fgr the supply of \\‘utel' at the freezing wbrks. . The following I'eso]ution'wa.s duly ca.rricd:—-“Whereas the Taihape Bor-

ough Council for the'purpose of com~ -pleting a certain undo-rt-.{king of the Council, Féing the construction of

wa.t.erwol*ks and the installation of electric light, constructing septic tanks, constructing public baths and erecting a. fire brigade station, in'respect -of which a special loan of £21,!500 was duly authorised by a. poll of ratepayers taken on April 25, 1909, iwhich was found insufiicient for the ipurpose, by special order on the Ist lday of August, 1913, raised a special. Iloan of £IOOO to pay the issue of debentures repayable on the Ist day of August, 1946, carrying interest at the rate of £4 10/ per eentum per annum, [and whereas it is found that the rate ‘of interest carried by ‘the said deben~ [tures is such that the same cannot be lfloated except at a discount and con- : sequent loss to the Council; and where» :as 3‘; is desirable that the rate of interest should be raised. Be it therefore enacted vas follows:——The Taihape Borough Council is hereby empowered to pay in respect of the loan of £IOOO raised by it by special order on the Ist day of August, 1913, :1 rate of in—iterest not‘ exceeding £5 5/ per contum. per -annum.”

j The report of the Valuer on the im~. provements on section 2, block 4, Taihape, was considered in -3ommittee,and. on resuming the Council reported that the valuation for improvements as follows be adopt‘ed:——On section occupied [by Messrs Bray, White. “and Howens £693; on section occupied by Mr k Somerville, £386. j A letfer was read from the Otaihapee Fm:nlm'.<' Meat and Prodnrze (‘.‘ompa»n}', :I:<king' that wdier should be suppliefl to the. freezing works at the rate of 30,000 gallons per hour.

The Mayor explained that a deputafion from the Comp:n~.y -waited on\.‘he Wafer Works and Elech-ic Light Com—xnifteo, and askerl flmt iho_v should be :11l0W€d to tap ffhc water when the new scheme to be placed before the ratepayers was oarriea through. If the rcquesf of the company for 30,000, gallons per hour was agreed to it would necessitate lthe sllbstihition of the 8inch pipe adopted for a 9-inch pipe.’ This change would mean the expendifnre of an adtlifionrll £2500. P

The nlzlHox- was exhaustively disc{lssed in all its bearings. During; the (liscussion it was Sffl!‘Cd that possibly the Company would require 36,000 gallnng per hour for scv’on months in ilm year; that if 2d per .1000 gallons was paid’ it WO'll]d bring in -about £BOO per year:

{that the question of the riglffs of owners of land would have to be considered when laying the mains to give the supply asked for; that the present daily requii-omelnts of the borough are between 80.000 and 90,000 gallons daily; when Kak_a. road and the west~ ern area are reticulated and supplied, the consumption of water will be in the neiglibourhood of 150,000 gallons per day; that Mr Toogood had estimated ‘that a. nine-inch pipe would supply 684,000 gallons and an S-inch pipe 480,000 gallons per day; that with a 9-inch pipe it would be possible -to supply the freezing works with the 30,000 gallons asked for and still have a. margin of safety.

The ogiinion was expressed that somdbhing more definite should be supplied by the Freezing Company as to their reqilirement:s.

The Mayor voiocd this opinion, stating that fhis should be before the Council before it amended the proposals previously adojrefl, and should also have a. guarantee from the Company.

Cr. Reid moved: That. a letter be sent to the Otaihape Meat. and Produce Company asking the guarantend quarrlcify of water it was prepared to fake per annum, and what the maximum daily quantity would be, thfé reply to be discussed at the next meeting of the Council on Friday week.

Seconded by the Mayor and carried.

A dralf. of the conditions of the new lease for section 2,~ block 4, Taihape, were submitted by the Borough solicitor. were considered. slightly amended, and adopted. , The Council then adjourned. ;
