THE MEAT OUTLOOK.
SLUMP IN PRICES LIKELY. MASTERTON, May 21. The position in regard to the meat market and the glut at Home are the chief topics Of conversation among Wairarapa farmers, and the situation is viewed with pessimistic feelings. Several prominent Wairarapa farmers with whom the Auckland Star representative discussed the matter consider that the future outlook is very gloomy indeed. Farmers freely admit that there is a bad time ahead, and they quite expect prices to slump heavily. In the ordinary course of events prices would have dropped from values ruling during the war, period, but the glut at Home and the competition of fresh American meat with the stale New Zealand produce will, it is thought, have a disasrous effect on New Zealand meat
The bungling which has occurred at Home and the manner in which New Zealand meat has apparently been sacrificed in the interests of American meat is strongly condemned by Wairarapa. On the other hand, it is generally considered that the prospects in regard to thedairying industry were never brighter. and would continue so for 2 long time. At the annual meeting of the Caifterton branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union Mr E’lgzrr,’chairn32n’ of directors of the Wellingtonp Meat Export Company, and Sir Wfalter Bhéhanan, M.LC.., "rew attention to the gloomy outlook for New Zealand muttio-n. Mr Hugh Morrison (chairman) spoke on similar lines at the annual meeting of the Masterton branch The whole position is certainly one to cause farmers much anxious thought
