WANGANUI SENSATION.
‘YOUNG MAN SERIOUSLY WOUND- : ‘ED. [9 MR C. E. MACKAY UNDER 3 -r ARREST. S A painful sensation was caused in Wanganui um Saiturday afternoon when it became known that a'returned soldier, -W'_alter Di’Arcy Cresswell, aged 24 years, had been admitted to the hospital suffering from a bullet wound in the right breast, and Tthat Mr M-ackay, the Mayor, was implicated in the affair. The fir-st indication of anything of an untoward "nature was shortly before 1 o’clcrk on Saturday afternoon, when people in lthe vicinity of Mr Mackay’S office-——Which is upstairs in a building in Ridgway Street, nearly opposite the Public Library-—were startled by the sounds of a. commo~ tion. A window was shattered and a. chair came flying out on to the roadway,‘ there xyas a Sharp report of a. revolver shrot———some people say the sounds of more than one were heard——' and a cry for help. , H‘
Constable David Wilson, Who was in the vicinity, Immediately made investigations, am found Cressweif sitting on f‘he‘staircase, his condition being‘such the/ti the constable immediately had the wounded man conveyed by ambulance to the District Hospital. _
Mr Mackay was taken into custody, and later in the afternoon fie was brought before Messrs D. McFa.l-lane and .T. C. ‘fiichzrrdsasr, J.’s.P., when a. charge of at'tenipté7l ’llTl'lrder was pre~ fvrred against him.
The progeedings Were of a brief nature; __ Mr W. J Tl-eadwell applied for bail Inspector Hendry said that. owing to the nature of the charge he would have to oppose the application g .~kccused was remanded until this morning H The injured man belongs to South Canterbury. He came to Wanganui on a visit last Tuesday. - On inquiry being made last evening. it was ascertained that the injured man was progressing satisfactorily,‘ and the doctors were hopeful‘ of his rec-overy. ‘ : , ‘.
