A long communication was received from the Welfare League relative to the appointment of a National Conference to deal with industrial strife and the protection of our key industries. (This was pnblished in our columns in extenso some Weeks ago). ‘Consider-able discussion, in a sober and serious vein, ensued on the question of industrial unrest generally whieh was emphasised by the impending railway trouble.
Mr Carroll said the suggested conference would probably do a great deal of good. In his opinion fhc weak link in the .propo~sa,l would be the personnel of‘ the labour representatives attending the conference; who would probably ‘be extremists of the most pronounced type. 'fi'e deplored the use of the strike weiipon in the 'se‘i<tle_menf. of industrial disputes. saying con’rinu~
lity of effort was the 'lif<_»:-blood of the country. ' J Eventually it was decided ‘uha-t the Government be asked to summon 3, Conference on the lines suggested by the VVelfal‘é League. ‘ I BRITISH SHOPPING WEEK.

I‘€Sollltioll in fa'VOlll‘ -of the idea, though the Opinion] was expressed that ‘it /‘would be a. diificult matter to put the American goods in stock out of the “way.
STAMPS AND. SLOT TELEPHONE. Mr Marlow said there was conzsrid» el-able difficulty 1003113’ in getting sufficient stamps at the end of the monrh or at the beginning Of the next, referring particularly to 1d and lid ones. Eightpenny and 4d stamps for telegrams were not procurable in any quantity. This was a. decided inconvenience, and Steps should she taken to remedy it. The other membel‘.s endorsed this statenlen . '
Mr Cunuinghame said the Government should be urged to insfal a stamp machine in the local post office and a slot telephone. There was one at Te Kuiti, 'a place of no mrorrzr impOl't:anCe than Taihape. Mr Carroll thought each post office was allowed a limited quantity of stamps, and «probably Taihape had reached its limit.
-Mr Marlow moved that the postmafster be written to requesting that a larger supply of 1d and 1.1_.d stamps be provided at the en-d of the month; also that -provision be made for a. sufficient quantity -of 4d and Scf stamps.——Seconded by Mr C_-unning-hame and‘ carried.

'lfl_lev.,§pe2{'ls:el-.p»ointed out the difliculty In storage of small quantities for the average customer. This should be rectifiedhy the Borough Council. i
Mr Cunninghame pointed out “that benzine and explosives could not be stored in the same building. The large dealens. should clutb together and erect a building. Ur M_cLaughlan said Nobles had a scheme for the erection of buildings suitable for storing explo:s.iv‘es, and suggested this firm should be written to.
Mr Munro remarked that a large quantity of explosives would be used in this district by farmers in stumping and clea.ring‘their' land, and some ‘provision should be. ‘maedefor’ storage.
Mr Marlow said it‘was the man who wanted a -small quantity who was handicapped. ‘ '
Mr Cunninghame thought if the persons interested in the sale of explosives brought the matter "before the Council something could be done in the erection of a store, and the Council would probably provide a site. Mr McLaughlan' moved that the Chamber find out from Messrs Nobel and Co. the conditions of the scheme under which they erect magazines, and put the scheme into operation in Tailmpe. Seconded by Mr Marlow and (:a‘rl'ied. Mr P. Ongley was L-le<:ted a member of the Chamber. The meeting t-hen adjourned.
