THE LATE MR WILKIE.

AN APPRECIATION.

From Our Ohutu. Correspondent.

To say that many an Ohutu-ite experienced a feeling of sbrrow when they lleard. that Mr David VVilkie, an erstwhile resident of Ohutu, had passed away, is but to state .a, ‘fact, and among the many farlilers of Ohutu in Taihape on VVedlfesday the chief topic ‘of <:ouVel'satioll was the sad news re(‘.<9§\’ed, and many were the tributes pziid the'3.V.illenlol'y of one who was a

stinct, Mr Wilkic made a success o_ff I his venture. Mr Wjlkie took an a-<;tive ! and intelligent iute-re'9t in all that perxtained to the welfare of ‘the district,

gund every good cause»-—chal'itable, mo- ‘ ligious, or civic was sure to have Mr ‘ Wilkie-’s generous -support. While as

ulre:ld.y fluted. his home at Ohutu was renowned for its liospihility. An ardent supporter of the “sport of kings” Mr Wilkie had. a. host of ‘friends right throughout the D‘onlinioli, for he had the art of making friends to .a marked degree, :flTd those privileged to have his friendship were indeed fortullate, for he was a true fl‘iend,in the highest sense of the word. Blessed with much of this world’s goods, the result of gvnuine hard labour and ability, Mr Wilkieewas able to indulge his taste for the beautiful, and qche splendidly laid out‘. grounds that adorn his old home in Ohutu remain an eloquenf testimony to his taste. He has now

passed to tha.'r7 “uv‘discoVlel‘ed .=coun-
