The Bruce by-election campaign was opened last night at Milton by Mr lames Begg, the Reform candidate, who dealt with the cost of living and its causes. He said it was the first duty of the Government to restore the cm-renoy at the earliest possible date. re—eS’rablish the gold standard, reduce the quantity hf paper cui.-‘fiency, and bring about 3. state of affairs whereby they would be able to demand gold and meet: their foreign exchanges in gold_ He. thought that untii fhen they would not be able to reduce the cost of living. It had been his privilege. as chairman of the Repatriation Board, to do something in the Way of repatriation, and he must say it was to the creditiof New Zealand soldiers that 75 per cent. had not asked for ~‘upport from anybody. The candidate said he was standing as a. suppoi-t.er of the Government, and he believed Mr Masse_v’s GovernJnenf was the most likely party to deal with the difficult queéiions to he faced. Mr Begg received a vote of confidence.
