As preyiously mentioned, . the‘ settlers’ annual picnic took plaee 011. the Papanui grounds on Thursday last, The n’eathel',_which had been anything but promising, cleared up the previous night, resulting in a. most. glorious day.. There was a large gnfchering, many visitors from the adjoining distl'icts_A being noticeable, and the varied colours of the ladies’ >a_n_<_l ehilclren’s dresses presented a.,..very _.chal'nling, scene. The jprineipal hqrse-jumping events were won by Messrs. H. E. Harris, N. Smith, und__;H. Jones, but I was unable to gel} the name of the winner of the pony junip—sufi”lee it to say that each event was keenly contested, the results being ‘very popular.
Nurherous foot races and other sports were well patronised, and pa._ss~ ed ofi:'*withoutL a hitch.
The children had been thought of, and had been 'pl‘o\'ided with zxppro-L priate amusexuentsu of varied descr_ip—tions. N During the aftemoon the children were also presented with their prizes for the garden competition——more about. this in my next.
The day finished oif with a dance in the evening, in the “Siberia” Wool—shed. Fully sixty couples took the floor, and kept the pace going until the small hours of the morning, all expressing themselves as having spent :2 most enjo_vzl.ble time. " A word of commendation is due to the (rimrggtie socl'e’tar_V, Mr R. G. Dzivis, and his committee, for the liighly satisfactory manner in which the day’;-, outing was proviflod and.’ carried out. Mrs F. Howie, as usual, took the" piano for fhe dance, a.-My assisted by several willing and aaeompiished lrfdies.
