RABBITS NOT DESTROYED.
HEAVY FINES ‘AT CROMVVELL.
DUNEDIN, March 19
The Magistrate’s Court at Cromwell was; occupied yesterday in‘ hearing cases against landowners for fail‘ ing to destroy rabbits, the charges be ing laid under the Act of 1918.
VVhen a defence was put forward, Hr Mosley, S.M._, said he had no jurisdiction, and that the I>oW9r Was absolutely in the hands of the inspectors. They had only to swear that they had visited any area affected and that in their opinion sufficient and necessary steps were not being taken to destroy rabbits, and a conviction must follow. Although the Act might be an excellent one, he was'_placed in an extraordinary and unfortunate position. Fines were imposed, varying from £loo——in one instance for a second offence——£4o and £lO in six cases of first offences.
His WO-rship» said he expected that the landowners will make strong representations to then Goirernment on the position.
