RAILWAYMEN’S GR I EVANCES.

RESOLUTION BY TAIHAPE BRANCH A.S.R.S.

At a well attended meeting of the Taihape Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants the following resolution was passed:——— a “That this meeting strongly protests against the recommendation of Mr Justice Stringer to meet the demands of therailwaymen by granting an increase of 1/ per day. \Ve

consider this totally inadequate to meet the ever increasing cost of living; and, further, we object to discrimination between married and single men in respect to the increase, and think that the time has arrived when railwaymen should seriously consider ‘the direct action method of securing redress to our grievances,” ; A “BOB” A DAY. “A bob 2. day, ‘boys. is What we married men are to get,” declared a worker at the Railway stop-work meeting on Monday; “and that is the beneficent amount we have been promised.” “Why,” he continued, “it won.’t pay for the increase in the price of bread. Justice Stringer lives in a beautiful home with nice surroundings, yet there are married men in‘ Wanganiii obliged to live with their families in tents because of the operations of the exploiter and profiteerfn’ Justice Stringer’s' recommendation,‘ the speaker contended, was an insult} “VVhat about the single nlen?,”j queried another. 1‘

The answer was given ‘thaf the increase of n “spi-at a day” was made in consequence of the solicitation of Mr Massey, who thought there would be an unholy row if the single chaps did not get something, consequenfly he prevailed upon Justice Sh'ingei' to agree to sixpence a day for them.

“The increase is simply absurd,’ said another, and as mentioned elsewhere it was decided to clenuand 5/ a day increase.——Wanganui Herald.
