MUNICIPAL BRASS BAND.

‘ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGr. The annual general meeting of the ‘ Taihape Municipal Bandlwas held in the band—room last evening, there being present. representatives of the Borough Council and a fair .iu-umber of bandsmen, the notable omission being that there was no representative -of the music-loving public. Councillor Fookes presided, and after outlining the most important business to come . before the ul-eeting, called On the Secretary to read the minutes of the, last annual meeting, which Were. subse; 5 quently coufirmed.. -The Chairman‘ mentioned the unhappy circumstances‘ which had reduced the band in num—‘ bers and effectiveness, but from the enthusiasm now apparent he felt justified in urging members to come together and practice so that they could crcditably earn the money which the Borough Council had voted conditionally on the band giving twelve free’ public performances during the year.] He pointed out that the roll of menl-' "ership now indicated that if all the nandsmexy would faithfully attend ‘ practices, the C‘d'l'l’ncil’s bonus could yet be earned with honour. A good} bandmaster was essential to success,‘ and he must be paid for the work the} making of a. good band entailed.| There were many other requirementsl that meant expenditure, and it wasl necessary that all should work togc-i ther to put the fi=n«a.nces of the band! on a strong footing. It had been suggested that the band should organise a concert, in which concerted vocal and instrumental items should figure} largely on the programme, and it was" probable a very considerable sum, could be so raised. However, he be-‘ lievcd bandsrnen would now come to-i gether in earnest and play the twelvel programmes necessary to earn the Council’g bonus, and place the band on‘.sueh 3. footing that the town would not feel the disgrace of being without a band to p‘lay at any, or all. of its, public outdoor sports and entertainments. then asked the meeting toi proceed to elect officers for the comingl . year. By a unanimous vote Mr Pap- ‘ worth was elected ‘president, Mr Loader was elected secretary, and Messrs J. H. Jolinson, J. Ormoncl, and‘ F. C. Bruce were appointed a com-i mittee to confer with members of the “ Borough Council. Mr Geo. Brice was’ unanimously chosen as bandmaster, and Mr Hartley as bland-sergeant. Mrii

Gillies was elected custodian and

librarian. Considerable discussion ‘jock place as to the best methods of increasing the number"of players, and proposals and suggestions were submitted whieh are to be finally decided upon at a meeting of the Committee on Mionday evening next.’ It was, however. decided that a valuable gold medal should be presented to the learner who had made the best progress during the year. Lads musically inclined are TO be invited to join the band as learners -next week, when systems of organisations and payment of tea(-lie}-s h':lve been decided upon. A most exitlmsiastie and useful meeting clo:<ed with 9, vote of thanks to the Chairman.
