TYPE AND MILK PRODUCTION.
The statement frequently heard that the cow of the accepted beef type cannot: be let large milk producer: It is very seldom that any reason for this incompatibility is given. It may well be questioned if this is zinything more than un unsound theory. It is wellknown that it is a, belief of many that the pail 9a.n(l the block qualities are not ('.0111biI1(.‘(1‘iIl one animal. It may well be asked, have those who are so dogmatic been favoured with the experience that would warrant that conclusion‘? There «are very obvious objections to that belief, for instance, the blocky clraught mare provides for her oflspring equally as well as the lighter framed horse. The bloeky breeds of the Down breeds rear good lambs; why should the bloeky cow the the only female that is condemned to exist through the ages as the eornparatively milkless mother‘?
Our. dairymen know that type is no infallible guide to the productivity of the cow. The B'abco-ck test has revealed that many a weélge-shaped animal should have no place in the deary herd of the farmer, that many a. bloeky cow is by that same testing method to be the chief nloney—makel' for the farmer who tests and reeo-rds the performances of his herd. The test and records are fhp arguments that establish the productivity of the cow against the genemlised theory of type.
