-Examined by Mr Matthews, defe:ld« ant stated that in January; of 15:18 the rams were taken off the steamer and driven in hot weather a distance of about five miles to Bucklaudfls pad dock, Onheunga. There was a watertrough on these grounds. but owing to its being specially constructed for cattle the animals could not reach up to drink. This and the fatiguing ;iourne_v to the pzuldock ultilnutely led to the death of twenty of their number and the depreciation of the re--117 ai nde I'. A. In defence to the counter-clailn the company denied having been guilty of nefxtigence. Good acconnnodation had been secured. but owing to the protrztcted voyage frmn the south the sheep were unable to stand the journey. and the <ll’-over was obliged to leave them in the afore mentioned paddock. Mr Poynton gave judgment for the
