SANITARY SCIENCE.

A conference of sanitary inspectors was held in the Town Hall, Wellington on Friday, January 23rd, which was attended by delegates fronl all parts of the Dominion, being representative of Government, Hospital Board and Municigal Sanitary Officers.
The conference -was called for the purpose of forming a Sanitiary Inspectors’ Association. Mr M. Kershaw (Christchurch) was elected chairman «and Mr F. B’. Gal-diner secretary of the cenference.
The Chairman, in his opening remarks, pointed to the need of an association for the promotion of knowledge of sanitary science as comes within the scope (if an inspector, which could only be obtained by meeting in conference from time to time and discussing matters of common interest, and possibly by the publication and circulation of la. journal, or suitable literature, for the interchange of ideas, and expressed his pleasure at the number who had attended the inaugural meeting, and also to the large number of letters received from persons who, being unable to be present, had expressed their sympathy with the movement, and placed before the conference for their serious» consideration the object as outlined in the memorandum of association placed before them. Dr. Watt, Assistant Chief Health Oflicer, and Dr. Faris, District ‘Health Officer, ‘representing the administrative heads of the Public Health Department, were present , and on their behalf expressed hearty sympathy with the objects of ‘the Association, and assured the meeting of their assistance in furthering the interests of the Association. .
~ After a full discussion, ‘the following resolution- was car:-ied:——“That for I the object of the promotion of sanitary tsciencc, and interchange amongst its rmembers and others, of such knowledge of sanitary science as falls with‘in ‘the depa.rtment'of 93. sanitary inspector in carrying out the duties imposed upon him by the Public Health Acts, Local Gnovernment Acts, and Sanitary Acts in force, a.nd which may in future become law, and to secure such protection and betterment in the rights, liabilities, and duties of Sanitary Inspectors as may be needful at any time, that an Association of Sanitary Inspectors be formed, and incorporated under the “Incorporated Societies’ Act, 1908,” and designated “The New Zealand Sanitary Inspectors’ Association” (Incorporated). An initial membership of over (50 was assured at the meeting. The ofiicers of the Association were elected as fo11ow‘s:-President Mr F. B. Gardiner (Napier); vice-president, Mr M. Kershaw (Christchurch); hon_ treasurer, Mr ‘W. ‘Tomrlinson (Christchurch); hon. secretary Mr J. Terry (Welling-g ton); auditors, Messrs Robinson (WOl-i lington) and W. B. Gough (Picton).’ Representatives from centres were elec— ‘
