Mr Williams, the civil engineer ungaged-, by the Borough Council to carry through street improvements as authorised by the ratepayers.’ ma for which a loan of ‘ £17,000 was zaised, was in Taihape during. the week; he has fixed the outlet level for drainage and made other detail =.t:ra.ngemen_ts, and the works will be in 'progrr-ss within the next fortnight. Contracts have been signed for the laying down of concerte footpaths, in accordance with the original plan, in Main Street and in Tui Street from Main Street to the railway station; for curbing and channeling in Main Street and ‘mi Street, and for steps on the west side of Main Street from the footpath level to the channeling, thus enabling a perfectly uniform street to be formed. The steps will be an ornament. rather than otherwise as -the rise in each of the two steps is only four inches, while the tread is fourteen inches wide. This: contract is to be commenced within a fortnight, and completed Within three months to avoid a penalty of £1 per day, over the contract time. The amount of the contract is only a slight advance on Mr Williams’ original estimate, on which the Loan Poll was taken.

l The newly appointed Borough Elecltriczxl Engineer, is Mr A. Thomson, of ‘Gore. Mr Thomson was for five years electrical and waterworks engineer to the Borough of Gore; previous to that he was second engineer in the tramways and electrical department; he was also Engineer at the Waipori Falls, the source of electric light for Dunedin City; he was also hydrau-lic engineer on the West Coast. Before coming to New Zealfind he was for sometime employed in the City of Glasgow Electrical Department. Mr Thomson is a’ thoroughly practical en- ‘ gineer and it will probably be found} that the Borough Council has made] an excellent selection from the appli- i cations for the position. The new Engineer commences duty in Taihape I in one month from this date.
