MEETING OF TAIHAPE SETTLERS.
COMPREHENSIVE LOAN PRO- » POSALS. .
FOR ROADING AND BRIDGING. A meeting of settlers was hnld in the Fire Brigade Hall, on Wednesday afternoon to ”d-ilscuss loan‘ proposals. for metalling roads practically from Taihape through Pongataua, Pukeokahu, Mangaohanle, and Otupae. Mr W. Doole was voted to the chair; the‘ meeting was well attended and was thoroughly representative of the whole district to be affected. Mr Mair, the. County Engineer was present, and supiplicd figums and data concerning }which many questions were asked. lT.he proposal subniitted was finally !adopted with an unanimity which in‘dicated that it was quite in accord with what the very large area stood urgently in need of_ It wasproposed‘ by Mr H. D. Bennett, and seconded"lb.y. Mr- T. V. Morrin {that a loan ofi£6o,ooo be raised to [complete the formation of the Mataiwhero Road, and ‘to bridge the Rangi't.i'kevi river in two places, one bridge to be at Pukeokahuv, the othler on the Moawhango-Napier road through Erewlion, also other minor formations to give outlets" to the main road. This resolution after discussion was adopted unanirnously. ' T-ht; chairman explained that the ,carrying of this; loan proposal would [result in a good meta-1 road being made ?av.ailahle from the Main Trunk railway iat Taihapedto. the East Coast at iblapier; it would also prove of meallculable convenience to settlers over a ivory large area of back country that }had hitherto‘ felt the want of . good §roads. The proposal involved the jcompletion of rsomle fifty miles of roadling in addition to the construction of itwo bridges, altogether giving fullest iacbezss from Taihape into the country %taken over by the Rangitklei County ‘from the Hawkefs Bay County, as it lfurnished a road by what is termed ;the lower route via. Pukeokahu to 7Otupa»2, where it joins the main Napier iroad, and back over the upper bridge [to Moawha.n.ga, by the old TaihapeiNa.pier road». » The meeting was materially assisted lin its deliberations by the presence of Ethe County Engineer, Mr Mair.
