NORTH RANGITIKEI ROADS
Mr Mair, the County Engineer, informs us that the •contract for metalling on the Opaea-Turangarere Road •has been let; also the Mataroa to contract. it i R hoped two other pits, one on the Turakina road., the othe rat Garmonsway s will beopened at an esi3y date. The Hi-hitahi-Rangiwaea road was in train and it is hoped to have all contractsin those localities let 'before Christmas.. • To enable the work to be performed most economically and expeditiously, two new stone-crushers ordered were expected to arrive within a week, and other essential machinery was,now being ordered.
Mr Mair ha s just completed a tourof the country via Pukeokahu, acrossthe Rangitikei liver, to Mangaohane,.. interviewing settlers in connection with metalling the roads and bridging the river to give full access with Taihape to settlers in the large area being taken over by the Esngitikei County from the Hawke's Bay County. The metalling of the Pukeokahu route is virtually assured/and it is most probable the return xoad and bridge, via Moawhango, will be included in the metlling and bridge building scheme, as the contract for the upper road would be much less costly if the work is done in conjunction with the lower road contract than if left and eventually let separately.
