MEAT IN BRITAIN.
IMPORTANT STATEMENT. LONDON, Nov. 26. v Mr McCurdy, speaking at Reading. said the Food Controller was considering the early removal of control over home-grown and imported meat. There would be no shortage during the next few months, but the interests of the consumer would not be limited to six months. There would be an actual shortage if the European demand increased before the shortage of production was made goo‘d. The Incorporated Society of Meat Importers, replying to Mr McCurdy_. points out that the United Kingdom is faced with an unprecedented glut. Over 100,000 tons are in store, and ships are unable to discharge. One hundred and fifty thousand tons ‘are. due during the next three months, land another 150,000 tons are awaiting shipment in Australia and New Zcaland. Meanwliile consumption has fallen 33 per cent owing to high prices, so that there is an ample ..sul'plus for Continent'a.l needs, Mr McCurdy, addressing the Committee of the House of Commons, said there was a glut of frozen meat which was held up in the Dominions, enabling consumers now to purchase at less than the Food Ministry’s cost. price. Control of imported meat would be abolished early in 1920. Mr McCurdy announced that the potatoes restriction had been withdrawn.
