TURANGARERE-OPAEA ROAD.
(To the Editor)
Sil~,;..ln,reading your report of the Chamber of Commerce meeting, held on Monday night, I’n-oticed the reply to a. reques/t"':rom the ‘Chamber that something should be done at once to the above-mentioned road, the EngiI neer replied, “No special treatm.ent of this road could be expected.” I can quite understand that Mr Mair does not know of any ‘reason why this road should get special treatmemt, la-s he takes all sorts of care to _keep off -the bad roads during the wet season of the year; he contents himself with staying close to Huntcrville and "Marten, where the good roads are. In fact, he sees so much of asphalt roads in his district as enables him ‘to furnish udvice to Taihapc Borough Council on the benefit of asphalt over concrete» for Borough streets.- If Mr Mair would 'ma.l3e one trip of juht eight miles from Taihape, along the Turangarere Opaea Road, ‘he would know something more about it, seeing that during the wetseason that road is all but blocked, resulting in cars and other vehicles being Very frequently bogged in the mud, teams of horses having to be used to extricate them. With this experience, Mr Mair would undoubtedly change his views; he would then consider there were rfeasons why*,'thi)s road should receive special treatment, and he might be persuaded to devote a little. more of his time to it instead of using up all his energy in pushing for~ ward improvements on his pet rolad, namely, the road that leads to Ruanui station. Why is the Mataroa-Ruanui road receiving so much attention, while other roads are being neglected? ‘Sir, it is '3. crying shame that within eight miles of Taihape we have roads which, during certain months of the -near, become iimpasisable, and then when a doctor,--who has to -travel the roads in all seasons, brings the matter up at a Chamber of Commerce meeting, and the Chamber communicates with the County Council on the subject, the Engineer of the County Council quietly tellg them he knows of no reason why the road should receive special treatment. . The ‘time has come when the Engineer should be moved out of his bed" of roses and made to reside more in the centre of his district. Thanking you in a.nticipa.tion;—l am, etc., NEGLECTED.
