A remarkable story of :1 ‘tl'oop(.~l' who successfully adininisterod --.1 district. containing 15,000 ilih:lbit:lllf.-'. while Hm district was u.ndol' Inal'l‘ial law, has just come to light. ’ The cciitral figure in the story is 'l.‘x'Copel' Thorneycroft, of the Royal Gloucester Hussars, the son of :1 Brisfol hotelkeeper.
Young Thorneycroft, who is only 22, was left behind when 'Genoral Allenby’s force was chasing the fleeing Turks through Palestine, He took charge of the town of Safed and sixty surrounding villages, and at once begun to act as Inilit»al'y governor. He continued in this oifice until he was relieved by Captain ‘Harrington, Military Governor of ’l‘iberias, 9. month later. “I found Trooper Thornoyeroft upholding his position with dignity,” wrote Captain Harrington, after he had taken supreme control. ‘(He spected by the people, who still speak of the sense of security which his presence ensured. “He handled large Sllllls of Turkish money, -and admi-nist‘el'ed justice in a rough and ready inanner, as HlO SWI3tion demanded. “The fact that a trooper could administer the district with such success that he secured a respect for the law from 15,000 people proves his capabilities.” Trooper Thorneycroft has been given :1. eonnnission in recognition of his ser- ‘ ‘ TO-NlGH’.l‘——‘ ‘ ANNIE LAURIE.” placed. in charge of the police there.
