BOMB FOR DETECTIVE.
, MELBOURNE OUTRAGE. SEQUEL 'l‘O FITZROY VENDETTA. MELBOURNE, sept. 30. Residents of Bennett Street, RichM mond were startled at a late hour last night by a loud explosion in the vicinity of No. 18, th-e"residence of Detective Bruce. The house next door was severely daniatged. ’ _ , 3 The explosion is believed to have been saused by ;a bomb, which was intended for Detective Bruee’s nouse. No one was injured. ’ ' It is considered that the outrage was a. doliberat.:e~ attack (711 the life of Detective J. Bruce, and the officer expressed the opinion to-‘day that the crime was the result of his .activ.e- par; ticipation in the clearing up of the shlodting cases ';'Lssoclia.teFd with the Fitzroy vendetta. It is’ believed that the bomb consisted of a bottle loaded w’ith gelignite and bolts. - Two young men were slcepingundcr the window of No. 16, slose ‘to where the bomb exploded; The Windlows were shattered, and pieces of the wall and tilnb_el' were thrown onto their bed, but escaped without injuries. A hole 2ft. deep was made ‘in the ground. Detective Bruce was absent at the time, and his wife was at hlome with three children. Mrs Bruce noticed a man walking around the house and peering into the windows. afterwards looking through the fanlight. ‘Evidently thinking thm. it was not the deteetive’s residence by seeing the children there, the miscreant threw the bomb at the adjoining house.
