This was brought under the notice of the Prime Minister (Mr Massey), who said he had not the complete figures for the three months. The latest official statement showed that there were 13 ships, with 3. capacity of 1,258,000 car-c-ases, now in Neiv Zealand, and 12 to arrive during August and September with a capacity of 1,197,000 carcases. The Prime Minister expressed the opinion that the position would not cause"nn:~:iety if reduction of the accumulation of meat was maintained.
Speaking in the House later, in reply to Mr G. V. Pearce (Patea), Mr Massey said the total freezing stores eapa- \ city of Great Britain was 200,000 tons, r and his recollection Was that there were 59,000 tons in store. He expected there would be four fiiillion carcases in store in New Zealand on 30th December. Estimating the season ’s output. for the firs‘t"6 months «at 6} million carcases, they would ‘thus have to move 10% million carcases, and he believed that at fthe end of the season they would have elfected such a clearance that there would be noedifficulty in arranging for the shipment of free meat at the same timeas the balance of the Imperial meat. 0
