SLUMP IN SMUGGLING.
Either’ British Customs officers are less detective ‘than they were, or as a naltion we are losing our d-ash, says a London paper. Last year -only 7853 seizures of smuggled goods were made, axjd the beggarly amount of £6086 was recovered in penalties. It would be almbst a blank day in New York if they didnt earn as much as fhat. Here the smuggler’s opportlxnity is more restricted, though it is wider than ‘it was. Tobacco and spirits are still the mai-nsfay, butt. matches, musical in~ sfiunlents, cinematograph films, clocks, aid watches are also among the contra--band. .
