LAND FOR SOLDIERS.
ANOTHER ESTATE PURC.‘H'ASED.. The Government has purchased am area of 2100 acres on the Hauraki‘ Plains, and comp_rises what is known as. the Orongo estate, and is situated on the Hauraki Plains side of the Ohinemuri river, just below Turau (near Thames), where there is‘a.notller-large-estate suitable for closer settlement. Some of the land on the Orongo esta'te~ is said to“ be ‘equal to~‘the'best' inany part. of New Zealand, and -cut up into small farms should be eagerly sought after. V ‘ . n "
Though the land was "not -actually included in (the comprehensive scheme of drainage of the Han:-aki Plai‘ns.Acar--ried out under; the supervision of‘ Mr J. B. Thomson, Government drainage engineer. it benefited greafly when the system was completed. It is‘ stated that 9.’ ful‘fhel' sum is to be expended upon impjsovcnlents before The property will be ready for settlemenf. It will then be cut up into farms of 40 to 50 acres, upon which 46 returned soldiers will be se’otle'd. The Government ‘has been in treaty for this block for a considerable time.
Already :3, number of returned soldiers have settled on the H-auraki Plains and adjacent district, and satisfactory reporlfs have been I'e.cc-ived as to the progress they are making. The whole district will soon be properly roaded, but as the Ohinemuri River skirts the eastern side oof the plains, while the Piako river imtersects it, and’ runs from inland past To Aroha‘to its outlet info the Hauraki Gulf,‘ the segcflcrs will have the choice of two ‘welltravelied watterways.
