Fookes said he was present at the last meeting of the band, when the matter was brought up, and there was a little dissatisfaction at not receiving“ a subsidy from the borough. The band‘ some years ago -had received £3O a.-. year for certain performances. It wasa little rough on the band to have to’:wait twelve months before the sub-» sidy was paid. He suggested a sub-» sidy should be granted, to _be paid quarterly. A band was a good asset to a town, which could not expect to! have a decent band unless oneourag-2. ed financially. - The gather councillors were .- Ignanil-4 ’meusly‘ of opi_u~.n that}. the . _b'-lD(]".. should but encourgecl, :and cxpre~ssed'~.~i a’ desire to do all tlu.l ».was; possi,-bl.-.,

There were several dangerous holes which should be attended to at once.

It was decided ‘that the new surfacemen engaged commence work on Tuesday, 22nd inst., and that Mr. Paradine, the new nightwatchxman, take up his duties on the 19th. Cr. Fookes, in referring to the library, said Rev. F. W_ Stent, had asked that the matter be left over until the peace celebrations had terminated. On the motion of the Mayor, Messrs. Arrowsmith and Loughnan were appointed borough solicitors. ‘ Cr. Timbs brought up the question of providing a rest room for ladies. It ' ‘would be a great advantage if this very- necessary convenience was available in town, and would be appreciated by a large number of wo_men who visited the town. He sa‘i'd smaller places than Taihape had them. i . The Mayor said it was a move in the right direction_ . In response to a question, the ActM ing Town Clerk stated that a room ‘ in the Town Hall was available for ‘ the purpose‘, on the top storey. A lavatory was: attached to another room. J The matter was left in the Mayorfs #- hands to arrange for a room for the "purpose indicated.
