AUCKLAND, this day At the Epidemic‘ Enquiry in Apia, Dr_ Atkinson stated he made his usual investigations on the Talune’s arrival. The captain “reported that the health, in New Zealand was perfect; that on the Talune,_;_everybody was ofi colour, all_ had the sniffles, but nothing seri~ ous, and we are all over it 9 now. Asked if the people were practically takan out of their beds for medical inspection, and struggled past him, Dr. Atkinson, replied this was the first he had heard of it. ' Dr. _Cotton, Secretary of Native Affairs, produced a statement of population of Samoa before the epidemic, Which was 58,178; .after the epidcniic it. was 30,656. The deaths totalled 7,542, including 3,265 men, 2704 women and 1573 children.
