ONE IN EVERY NINE

According to statistics complied by the American Government" one In nine American marriages are terminated by

divorce.

The 1916vCQusus shows that there were 112,03 ff divorces during the year. This is at the rate of~ll2 per 100,000 of the population, compared with S 4 iii 1906, 73 in 1900, arid 53 in 1890. These figures show that 'the rate has more than doubled during the last twentysix years excluding South "Carolina, where the laws do not permit divorce.

The lowest numbe r of divorces in New York State of 32 per 100,000 is due ito the fact that infidelity is the sole ground for divorce in New York. The higest rates per 100.000 were: Nevada 607, Montana 323. Oregon 255. Of the total numbers, 31.1 per cent of the divorces were granted to husbands and 65.9 pe r cent, to v. i vss. This proportion remains fairly constant through previous years (says, the "Daily Express" correspondent.) The percentage of couples who possessed children was 37.7 and the percentage without was 52.1. No children were mentioned in 10.2 per cent of the cases
