TWO GREAT ENTERPRISES.
Should all go well with the Channel Tunnel scheme, the world will see two colossal enterprises running a race together (says the Daily Chronicle). Holland's great x)yke across the mouth, of the Zuider Zee is on the same plane in point of cost, labour, and far-reaching effects on human life. The dyke will run into £20.000,000, will carry two lines of railway,, and a broad highway, and reclaim from the inland sea nearly 5000 farms of 100 acres each.
By the time the Channel Tunnel is finished, say in nine years as a generous estimate, the Zee will have settled its first batch of colonists on the primeval ooze, and in another 20 years a farming population of a quarter of a. million rnay be happily at work.
