PEACE CELEBRATIONS.
PROCESSION AND DECORATIONS
A meeting of the committee having charge of the procession and decorations in connection .with the Peace Celebrations was held, last night, thcr e being present: Messrs Marlow .(chairman), O'Callaghan, Gibbs, Hintz, Howcns, Somerville, Read, Hesketh, Dunbar, and Strong. It. was reported that the following had kindly agreed to act as judges in the various competitions: Mesdanics Boyd, Emerson, TDe Latpur, and Loughnan; Messrs G. Durrand, M. M. Carpenter, T. Morrison, and En.-ior. The various samples of certificates submitted for prizes were not considered satisfactory, land Messrs Strang, Somerville, and Marlow were appointed a committee to deal with the matter.
Three designs were received for the triumphal arch, which is to be erected between the Bank of New Zealand and Messrs Bennett's, Limited, and, after consideration, the design submitted by Mr H. F. Strong was accepted. Thrj. arch is to consist' of four columns, with a centre circle superimposed, containing the Allied flags, and surmounted by the figure of Victory holding a wreath of laurel in outstreached hand. The British and New Zaalaul flngr. < merge from the junction of the circle with the two inner columns. On the outside columns arc two lions couehnnt In the centre panel are the words, "Victory and . Peace.''
The work of erecting the arch was left to a committee consisting of Messrs Hesketh, Gibbs, and Strong. An appeal is to be made to shopkeepers to individually do their best in the way of decorating their premises, particularly the verandah, posts. It was decided to engage a shop in the town in which to collate all the material for street decorations, and proceed with their manufacture as far
;;.s possible, in order to lessea the work at the last moment.
Committees are to be set up at the next meeting to take in "hand the arrangement of the different sections talcing part in the procession, so that each section will proceed to its given position, and not cause confusion at a single point of congregation. After various other matters of detail hal been arranged, the meeting adjourned till next Monday night.
