WORKERS’ DWELLINGS.

The local Inspector of factories has received the following letter, which contains some useful information:

With reference to the leading article in the “Taiha.pe Daily Times, ■dated the 26th of February last, regarding the Housing of Wai ijP s :i x ° r your information the is the procedure to be followed regarding enquiries for workers’ dwellings. 'Each person desiring a worker’s (‘dwelling must apply for same on the usual aplication form, W.D. IA. Applicant, if he is a‘ ‘ worker within the meaning of the Workers’ Dwellings Act (viz., landless and in receipt of an income of not more than £l/5 per annum—war bonus for the purposes of the Act ‘is not considered earnings) must make a statutory declaration (form W.D. ID) to that effect. The application is then handed to you for your report on form W. D. A2. The application, together with the declaration, (if any), your report, form W.D A2, and a deposit of £1 are forworded to this office for the consideration of the Workers’ Dwellings Boafid. The applicant is advised whether his application has been approved or not, and, if the former, same is then placed on the file until such time as the Department is prepared to build. When sufficient applications have been received, and the Department is prepared to consider building, an advertisement will be inserted in the local papers asking for offers of vacant land suitable for workers’ dwellings. When the Department is prepared to erect a dwelling the applicant. is askedfor £9, being the balance of the deposit due on the application. I may state that the question of amending the Workers’ Dwelling Act to allow of a greater amount of income to be received by the applicant, will probably be considered at the next Parliamentary session. I enclose herewith 'the forms for the application of a worker’s dwelling.

HENRY E. MORTON. Deputy-Superintendent Workers’ Dwellings. cmf
