On April 26, 1919, five Englishmen, acting under charter from an English Lodge, started the American Order of the-Independent Order of Oddfellows. The order now has 17,698 lodges, with a total membership of over two million.
Our report of the Taihape Householders' meeting is unavoidably held over. It will appear to-morrow.
Messrs. McLcod and Gardner, Rauriniu, are wanting men for twin saws, a bobber for mill skids, and a man for the bush. Good wages aro offered.
For the convenience of country people attending the Cattlo Pair at Taihape to-morrow, the Hautapu Dining Rooms will have a hot dinner ready from 11.30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The transport Northumberland and Kia Ora are due shortly to arrive in the Dominion. By the former. the following men from this district are returning:—G. F. Bilderbeck, Taihape; L. M. During his lecture on the war at Lower Hutt recently, Mr. F. W. Haybittle said that when the people in; England and in New Zealand were payng 3/6 per gallon for petrol 1 it could be bought from the War Department for lid per gallon. He did not know the reason of it, but it never increased beyond that price. The War Department may have made a great contract at a lower figure or someone was< making an enormous profit.
The official opening of the golfing season in Taihape will take place on Thursday next, May- Ist, at 2 p.m. Putting competitions and mixed foursomes will bo arranged. A cordial invitation to be, present is extended by the committee of the Taihape Golf Club to members and intending members, together with their friends. In the evening a social will be- held in the Three Stars Theatre, when the prizes land trophies won during the past season will be formally presented to the winners. "I don't want a ministrcl troupe," was the explanation of John E. Slater, an army sergeant, who, it was alleged at Thames Police Court (Lonelon) married a woman at St. Augustine's Stepney, although he had a black wife and five children in South, Africa. The charge against Slater, who was wearing the South African and other ribbons, and the long service chevron, was that he had made a false statement with a view to its insertion in the church register. He'now declared that he meant to stick to the "wife on this side of the water,'/ and he was committed for trial
In the Perth Court a few days ago Lieut. Leslie Twedie, who is under orders to proceed to Victoria as aide-de-camp to the State Commandant, sued "Mrs Daisy Hope for £7O 10s, military allotment collected by defendant during plaintiff's absence on military service, Defendant, it was claimed, collected the money as plaintiff's fiancee, and then married another man. During the hearing defendant seized some- letters produced by plaintiff's counsel, tore them up, and thrust the fragments into her blouse, declaring, "My letters aren't going to be read in this court!" The court imposed a fine for contempt, and adjourned the case, defendant havin-j raised the plea of infancy.
