STEADILY INCREASING.
RAPID SPREAD IN COUNTRY.
SYDNEY, April 9
Influenza in the metropolitan area is steadily increasing its hold and is rapidly spreading- in the country. Besides the 255 deaths officially reported it is stated that 75 have occurred since the outbreak outside the hospitals.
In Victoria the disease is still virulent, 41 deaths and 441 fresh eases having been reported in the past three days. The city hospitals are overcrowded and there is a great shortage of nurses. The buildings on the I%ndwick race-course have been taken over for hospital purposes. A DESPERATE GANG. POLICE BAFFLED. MELBOURNE, April 9. The police are baffled by the exploits of an armed masked gang, who are holding up trams in the suburbs, relieving the conductors of cash, and using violence, and shooting when resisted. The gang operates in a different locality each nlgTit.
