o SMART CAPTURE BY CONSTABLE
MANLY.
Constable Manily, who is stationed at Marton, received information from the Taihape police on Monday that a man named ohn Spain, alias G. A. Kendrick, had uttered a cheque for £2O on the Bank of New Zealand, Newton, Auckland, purporting to be signed by G. A. McKendrick. The cheque was issued to H. Fulton, a bank official, at Taihape. The Taihape police were of opinion that the man had left in a taxi and would probably go through Marton Constble Manley kept a. watch on all suspicious cars and was „«cwarded for his watchfulness at eight o'clock by seeing a taxi car pull up near tlfe Club Hotel at Marton. He approached the car, but the occupants denied any knowledge of the offence, and the accused stated that his name was McKendrick. Constable Manley, however, was not satisfied -with his explanation and arrested the accused with a companion in the car, who was under the influence of drink. Accused afterwards admitted that his name was John Spain. At Marton Court on Tuesday morn-

Constable Manley stated that two other charges were pending. At the Taihape Police Courf on Wednesday accused appeared to answer the charges, and was remanded I till Monday.
