NEW STOCK SALEYARD.

It should be gratifying to every farmer and .every (businessman in the Taihapc territory to not' that the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Company, Limited, are about to erect stock saleyards in Taihape, Mangaweka, Huntcrvlllc and Marton, of a most substantial character. It is another indication of the rapid progress of this huge district, with its almost limitless possibilities for increased production. It is not good for any country, or district in any country, to have trading facilities beyond what can be profitably utilised; but although, the erection of additional stock saleyards in some districts may over-supply the demand, resulting in an increased charge by auctioneers for selling, there is, no danger of anything

of that kind arising in. Taihapc. Every practical stock breeder and farmer visiting the local agricultural and pastoral shows during the last few years have expressed surprise at the extraordinary producing capacity of the very extensive surrounding country, and the foremost stock breeders of the Dominion have predicted that Taihapc will rapidly rise to being one of this country's greatest stock centres. Wo hearlily welcome th'e Farmers ’ saleyards because l wc are convinced they

will not detrimentally affect, to any appreciable extent the business of icth'er

stock agency firms; but, on the other hand, will tend to materially increase the volume of stock coming into Taihapo yards. And when a favourable settlement and production policy is inaugurated, which permits of only an ordinary legitimate increase of settlement, oven with the Farmers’ new yards, there will be noted for further extension. With the territory now finding its outlet through Taihape,

which has been hitherto linked up in Hawke's Bay, there must arise a huge--ly increased volume of stock business. Wc understand that the owners are themselves sub-dividing some of the very largo estates for closer settlement, ■nid if others follow we shall not. he surprised to see signs of growing

prosperity around Moawhango, and a need for the erection of stock saleyards in that locality. There was no time in the history iof this district that its trading and producing interests needed more careful and interested handling than they do at this present time. It is a matter of urgency to see that flic upbuilding of the future, for which this period of its history is responsible, is not, injured by apathy or its ruin risked by want of business acumen and cleverness. People of the town seem quite content- to trust to chance, but to depend upon such a fickle .jade may result in incalculable misfortune, and though it can never prevent Tailing from becoming a centre it can modify ionsidcrably the success that might easily be achieved.
